Teal bay is a remote, north-east facing sandy bay with excellent swimming, boating and fishing. There is an appealing quietness with no stores nor camping grounds. Whangarei is 45 minutes, Hikurangi town 25 minutes and Oakura Beach store 15 minutes.
Swimming is easy at all tides, body-boarding best at mid to low tides. Often there is a break at one end of the beach for surfers. The estuary at the other end gives sheltered water, great for supervised toddlers. Boat launching is easy two to three hours either side of high tide in the estuary but best with tractor or 4 wheel drive to leave the boat on mid tide sand.
The estuary has reliable and entertaining sprat fishing around high tide and mooring piles.
There is plenty to do for short or long stays. The expansive Mimiwhangata coastal reserve and Rimariki Islands are 15 minutes south by car or boat
